Fitness Apps During Quarantine

May 5, 2020

Well, here we are, day number…who even knows, I’ve lost count. We’re in this COVID-19 quarantine for the long haul and I’ve realized I’ve completely taken my gym for granted. Those early morning workouts in a large gym, with an unlimited amount of equipment and space, feel like fond memories that we won’t get back anytime soon. On to a brave new world.

For the past three years, I have and still enjoy Beachbody® On Demand. It’s been my go-to for all workouts, and you can read more about my experience here. However, this quarantine has made me stir crazy, and I desperately needed to switch up my workout routines. I’m never giving up on Beachbody. I just need something, in addition, to keep me guessing. And that my friends is Fit52.

I’ve always been a fan of Carrie Underwood since season 4 of American Idol! When her book came out Find Your Path: Honor Your Body, Fuel Your Soul, and Get Strong with the Fit52 Life. I was very curious to learn more about her health and fitness journey as well as giving her workout app a try. I mean, who doesn’t want a body like Carrie Underwood! Sign me up!

To get started:

  1. Downloaded the Fit52 app (looks like it’s just for iOS users at the moment)
  2. Answer questions about your fitness experience/how often you workout
  3. Workout commitment; how many times a week do you intend to workout:
    • Getting Started
    • Reasonably Active
    • Very Active

Based on your answers, a workout path will be presented (note that you can adjust at any time). I am very active and chose Carrie’s Path 5 Full Workouts per week | Intermediate.

In my first workout, I didn’t know what to expect. With being comfortable with Beachbody On Demand, I felt I could easily transition to another workout regimen. I will tell you, after the first workout, I was a bit of a hot mess. It was all the unknowns: you aren’t sure what exercises are planned for that particular day so you cannot prepare yourself with which weight to use, bands, mats, etc. For the first workout, I kept pausing in order to make sure I had the correct weights and space. Putting all that aside, after I completed my first workout, I was drenched in sweat and felt muscles I never knew I had! The first workout is over, and now I know how to set myself up for success for the next workout.

Fit52 workouts range from 30-50 minutes, each with 26-52 different exercises, depending on which path you choose, providing a full body/cardio workout. Think of a deck of cards (4 suits, 52 total cards) each card represents a pre-determined exercise and number of reps. Every exercise is demonstrated before the card “being flipped,” which is enough time for you to watch the demonstration and prepare yourself for that exercise. Every workout starts with a warm-up, 26 exercises, followed by a one-minute break at the halfway point, 26 additional exercises, and a cool-down.

Here are a few example workouts I have completed:

I’ve been working out with the Fit52 for two weeks and I started to get annoyed by the fact that it seems I’m doing the same exercises over and over again. There’s been zero creativity in exercise planning and my arms are tired of thrusters, lateral raises, and pushups. After that first week, I reached out to their support staff to gather their thoughts and they informed me that more workouts would be released once COVID-19 subsides. Thank goodness because I truly love this workout concept.

With that being said, I don’t see COVID-19 ending anytime soon and want to keep active with Fit52. I’ve continued to use the app, but now I’m planning my own exercises prior to working out and using their card shuffle routine to keep me guessing. This way, I’m still guessing which exercise will be next while getting in a full-body workout. I don’t feel bored at all with this way of working out because I never know which exercise and or how many reps I have to do next. The workouts fly by and I feel great after each one.

I’ll leave you with this, there is no time like the present and while we all are stuck in quarantine, it might be time to set a new goal or try something different. Whether you are trying to lose weight, gain muscle, tone, relieve stress, or just feel better about yourself either of these fitness apps will work for you. And the best part, you are working out in the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is start! Each fitness app has a free two-week trial period for you to see if it’s something that would work for you. If you like it, Fit52 is under $52 a year and Beachbody On Demand is $100 a year. I personally feel both are worth it.

Already using these apps or have a different app you use? Share with us your review and which workouts are your favorites!
