Philly Fashion Blogger: Work Appropriate Event Dresses

August 28, 2018

As many of you know, I work in the meetings and events industry, which makes attending events somewhat of a norm. From fundraisers, galas, award ceremonies, networking events, conferences, tradeshows, business dinners, themed events, VIP events…I think you get the idea. Since I attend so many events throughout the year, I’m always making sure I present myself (and my company) well, and of course, in style. When you look great, you feel more confident. And that is something I am always on board with.

Recently, I’ve noticed more and more confusion around what ladies and gentlemen should be wearing when attending such events. Whether I’m receiving messages or monitoring #hashtag driven conversations on social media, everyone seems to be confused. And I honestly don’t understand why. If you are attending an event, no matter what, being overdressed is WAY better than being underdressed (I am a huge advocate of this). You never want to be that person who missed the “non-causal” dress code memo. You can find out more about this topic from my previous “Dress to Impress” blog post. Or maybe, event professionals should draw even more attention (than they already do) to the dress code whenever possible: invite email, event website, reminder email, social – anything related to the event. I know, I know, I can hear my friends who are event profs saying, “WE DO, and people still miss it.” Well, I am going to predict that this vicious cycle will continue for years to come and I am going to help eliminate as much confusion as possible.

When it comes to evening events, I pretty much always gravitate towards dresses more than any other piece of clothing. Ladies, you can, of course, grab your trusty LBD (little black dress) if you are unsure. It’s always a safe choice with thousands of options. Or find any dress that is flattering on you that gives you the extra confidence you deserve. Since I don’t want any of you to have any doubts on what to wear to your upcoming events, I decided to round up some of my favorite evening dresses for your viewing pleasure. I’ve put together many different styles and at different price points.

Sidebar: Here is a little trick that I use when it comes to planning my outfits. I grab an actual planner (paper, pen and all) and write down all my potential upcoming events I might be attending. I research the venue/type of event and jot down some ideal looks. After that, I see what I have in my closet, figure out what I am missing and either purchase, ask a friend who might have a dress that would work or when in doubt Rent the Runway!

To my fabulous gentlemen followers (or ladies whose men are a little clueless), I haven’t forgotten about you. It can be unexciting to always wear a suit to an event but don’t be boring about it. Dress up your suit with a pop of color with your pocket square, tie, socks or even dazzle your look with a textured button down. Here are some options below.

No matter what, I hope this inspires you to find something or at least be prepared for your next event! Find a few essential dresses that fit all types of events and change them up with accessories. It’s all about feeling confident while looking fabulous! And don’t get me wrong, who needs an excuse to purchase an outfit? Not me!

Have an upcoming event and need some guidance? Drop a comment or message me. Always happy to assist.

Here are the details on my outfit pictured in this post.

Dress:
I found this fit and flare dress at Nordstrom and had to have it. I love the sophisticated drape with ruffled cap sleeves, which adds a feminine touch to the dress. The hidden zipper in the back with a keyhole tie closure helps ensure a perfect fit and is very flattering for all body types. Note the tie component, which elevates the overall look. It takes the dress from ordinary to extraordinary – the tie length is versatile. A real timeless elegance dress that will capture compliments everywhere you turn. The dress fits TTS (true to size), available in regular, petite, and plus sizes. And it’s available in three colors; Burgundy Stem, Navy Sapphire, Teal Deep.

Heels:
You cannot go wrong with a fabulous suede shoe, and when I found these, I knew I needed them in every color. Really! Very fashionable, comfortable and available in a variety of colors and fabric at an unbeatable price! I suggest ordering a size larger as they do run smaller than usual.

Bag:
Having a durable workbag is a game changer and having one that is fashion forward is even better. This bag is at a much higher price point; however, it’s built to last. Are you looking for additional works bags? Check out my previous blog about some of my favorite stylish work bags.

Earrings:
I am obsessed with these earrings. Voyager’s Dream has so many unique designs that I cannot live without. My friend runs and designs her jewelry out of Texas and is really making a name for herself. Check out her new arrivals for fall.

It’s always better to err on the side of a little too dressed up if you’re a guy, for sure! I love that three-piece you posted.

That dress is so cute! And it’s in plum which is my favorite fall color. When it comes to day to night wear I normally stick to dresses as well. You can’t really go wrong with a dress because you can dress it up or down. Thanks for sharing!

Such a great article and guide!! I’m always amazed when people dress casually to events. A structured bag is definitely a good thing to have, especially to a work event.
