Stay Organized

Like most people in the world, we seem to never have enough time in our day to complete everything we want. We all have a laundry list of “to-dos” that seems to get longer and longer.

Not sure about you but I’ve tried so many tactics and read multiple books to compile as much knowledge as possible to learn new, more efficient ways to manage my to-do list. I am one of those individuals who has multiple notebooks everywhere; you can find them all around my house, in my office and my purse and if all else fails I use my phone (which has multiple apps on it to also keep track of my to-do list). I work really hard to keep myself focused and tackle the day. I thought I was doing everything right until I came across a book at the airport called “Organize Tomorrow Today” written by Dr. Jason Selk, Tom Bartow with Matthew Rudy. And even though they capture a lot of known nuggets on how to keep organized, their approach helps keep me focused.

As I was reading the first few chapters, I glanced at what I thought was a well-organized to-do list and I had my plan of attack laid out for the following day, week and goals for the month. However, I still felt the stress and never knew why. As I was reading their book it hit me that my mind never shuts off because whatever I didn’t cross off on my to-do list got pushed to the next day and now my next day was PACKED! I didn’t know how to get it all done. I was SUPER busy but never felt as if I was productive. I knew I was getting a lot done throughout the day but I kept asking myself “What did I actually accomplish?”

What changed was focusing on the items that are the most important and narrow them down to three and one of those three have to be a must complete. For each of my tasks I add additional details around them in order to keep on track, and my ideal time I want it completed by. After implementing their strategy, I noticed I was able to relax more without feeling I couldn’t step away from the computer and I sleep more because I know exactly what I accomplished that day and I know what is in store for me tomorrow. After each day, I write myself a note about how I felt on the completion of my tasks and if there was anything I needed to improve.

I am an athlete and I understand the preparation that is needed in order to be successful. So why not apply that to my everyday life? The same way I approached hitting the ball hard or controlling my ball placement or understanding my opponent can completely be transferred into my everyday work routine.

You have to prioritize what is most important in order to be successful and manage your time according to your plan. I know my goals and I tackle them in smaller segments every day, week, month, quarter, and year. It doesn’t happen overnight and I have to learn to be patient. If I am putting in the time and effort and preparing myself to achieve my goals, then I will be unstoppable.

    Thank you for the tips and the book recommendation Jules. I just glanced at the personal to-do list on the app on my phone (no work items allowed on that list). As I sit here on Friday night, there are 97 things on that to-do list. Weekends are supposed to be for relaxing right? It’s a never ending process of learning how work with what we’ve got.
